Employers of choice are beginning to see the value in understanding their employees’ sense of wellbeing. There are significant advantages through the medium of workplace training for organisations that realise the importance of investing in employee wellness. Also a staggering  ROI to the business of 300%, as it’s been estimated that for every dollar spent on wellness initiatives, up to $3 is saved in health care premiums and $2 in absenteeism. The real impact however can be seen in the value on investment of wellness programs.

Juggling workloads and external commitments, along with the management of finances on an ongoing basis is a constant source of stress. When under heightened pressures it can negatively impact our physical and mental health.

In Kineo’s recent HRM article, learn more about identifying stress in the workplace

HRM detailed in a recent report that financially stressed employees lose on average 6.9 hours of productive work a week and are absent four days a year due to stress-related illness.

As CEO’s recognise that it’s the organisation’s employees that make it successful, we should promote a culture of employees that is healthy, happy and productive. Workplace Wellness programs benefit both the employer and employees, especially when integrated with a work health and safety program.  Key advantages include;

  • Increased motivation and productivity
  • Improved employee relations
  • Healthy work environment
  • Less work-related poor health and ailments
  • Reduced workers compensation costs
  • Decrease in absenteeism and staff turnover

In conjunction with workplace wellness, the importance of healthy lifestyle behaviours should be incorporated and should include employee promotion of:

  • Healthy eating
  • Physical activity
  • Healthy weight
  • Quitting smoking
  • Reducing harmful alcohol consumption
  • Mental health and wellbeing

Benefits to employers include;

  • Standing out as an employer of choice
  • Retain your best talent and reduce staff turnover
  • Boost the reputation of your business
  • Easily promote your health and wellbeing credentials

In support of workplace wellness and in collaboration with UNiSA, Kineo has created a bitesize series of Healthy Heart courses.  This is a great addition to a workplace wellness program.  This course series has been developed to increase an understanding of the risk factors for heart disease and stroke.

The course will provide an understanding of;

  • The basic elements of a healthy-heart lifestyle
  • The importance of a heart-healthy lifestyle, and
  • How you can make healthy changes to your lifestyle

You will be surprised about what you don't already know (and should!)  - Get started with Healthy Heart Fundamentals

If you are new to workplace wellness and want to kick start a program, there’s plenty of room for creativity and innovation, and on a lean budget. With any level of investment, wellness programs give back so much.

Define what your employees want by conducting a workplace survey. Remember to bolster your chosen wellness perks with workplace training that will reinforce positive education around mental and physical wellness.
